~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The accompanying image was produced by a prototype of SPURT. SPURT is a 512
color ray tracing program I am currently developing for the Atari ST.
SPURT is designed to allow the modeller total control over the image. The
user has complete control over the camera position and direction, the color
and position of light source(s), and the objects used to produce the scene.
Scenes are generated from 8 generic primitives : spheres, cylinders, cones,
cubes, squares, planes, tetrahedron, and octahedron. These primitives can be
scaled, rotated around any axis, and positioned. The values of each object's
attributes are set by the user. The user sets coefficients for amounts of :
ambient light, diffuse light, specular highlights, reflected light, and
refracted light. The user also sets the index of refraction and the phong
shading factor.
The program will be distributed using a method similar to that formerly used
by Darek Mihocka for the ST Xformer... when version 1.0 is completed, it will
be distributed through GEnie, Compuserve, BBS's, etc.
Any later versions will only be available to registered users. Registered users
will receive a description of new versions as they are completed. All
enhancements and limitations of the new version will be clearly described.
Registration cost will be $25. If a copy of a new version is desired, it will
cost $5 (to cover the price of the disks and postage).
I currently plan to have version 1.0 completed and ready for distribution by
Apr. 1, 1990.
If you have some experience with 3D modelling, and are interested in SPURT, I
would appreciate some early registrations. I would like to see some images
being circulated when version 1.0 is completed. Early registrants will receive
their first desired update free.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Planned enhancements for later versions include :
-- checkerboard squares/planes
-- images (spectrum or other format) as 2D squares in scenes
-- mapping of images (spectrum or other format) onto spheres, cylinders, etc.
-- texture mapping
-- CAD-3D(c) objects as scene primitives
-- support for new graphics hardware devices or new extended pallette picture
formats
-- an animation control language similar to Cyber Control(c) to automatically
generate ray traced animations
-- any user requests which are feasible
